Leading up to World Diabetes Day on November 14, Vinita Bali, managing director, Britannia Industries Limited, was pinned with a Blue Circle – International Diabetes Federation’s (IDF) global symbol of diabetes awareness at the Diabesity Summit. The Blue Circle pin symbolises uniting for diabetes. IDF’s Pin-a-Personality campaign aims to increase global awareness of diabetes through public figures globally. In the past, personalities like Kofi Annan, ex secretary-general to the United Nations, Helle Thorning Schmidt, prime minister of Denmark, and Sir Steven Redgrave, British Olympic champion, have been pinned with the Blue Circle.

Bali said, “Diabetes presents the single largest health challenge to India’s adult population and is threatening its population and the economy.” She went on to add, “Our commitment to diabetes management began in 2010 with the launch of NutriChoice Diabetic Friendly Essentials, a range of clinically-proven snacks for people with diabetes. We are also the first food company in India to have eliminated trans-fats completely across our products.”

“Given the complexity of the diabetes challenge and the increasingly erratic lifestyles of Indians, it is imperative to drive coordinated action through multi-sectoral partnerships and programmes, and with extreme urgency,” she said.

She added, “Britannia has always believed in being part of the solution, and not the problem and is committed to awareness creation and comprehensive understanding of nutrition and lifestyle solutions that can help people with diabetes manage the condition better.”

According to the 2012 IDF Diabetes Atlas, India has 64 million people with diabetes*

IDF estimates suggest that the number of people with diabetes will grow over 100 million people by 2030

It is further estimated that over 31 million people are living in India with undiagnosed diabetes

India is home to the largest number of people with diabetes in the world, only after China

Healthcare expenditures due to diabetes were estimated to be over $4.5 billion in Southeast Asia with a majority in India

Speaking on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Bali said, “Non-communicable and lifestyle disorders like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases need a significant build-up in attention and occasions like the World Diabetes Day drive awareness and salience of the challenge. Britannia NutriChoice, over the years has partnered with other like-minded organisations to generate diabetes awareness and reach the lifestyle management message out to people at large.” On World Diabetes Day, India will see blue lightings, diabetes screening drives and physical activities such as walkathons all over the country uniting against diabetes.
