fiogf49gjkf0d The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has sanctioned 42 sub-projects with a total outlay of Rs 22,102.72 lakh in twelve states (namely Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal) under the first phase of the National Dairy Plan (NDP-I), which was launched in March 2012 for implementation between 2011-12 and 2016-17.
Due to the special effort and initiative taken by agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh, a sum of approximately Rs 15,895.02 lakh has been sanctioned as grant assistance, and the remainder of the aforementioned amount as the share of end implementing agencies (EIA), through which the board is implementing the scheme.
EIA comprise state governments; state livestock boards; state cooperative dairy federations; district cooperative milk producers’ unions; cooperative enterprises (such as producer companies, trusts [non-governmental organisations {NGO} and Section 25 companies]); subsidiaries of statutory bodies; Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes, and veterinary/dairy institutes/universities, and other entities (as may be decided by the National Steering Committee to be set up under the Plan).
Of the 42 sub-projects, nine would be implemented for fodder development; 13 for the ration balancing programme; 14 for the village-based milk procurement system; four for embryo transfer, and one each for the import of bulls and the strengthening of the semen station.
They were sanctioned to help increase the productivity of milch animals (and thereby increase the milk production to meet the rapidly-growing demand for milk), and to help provide rural milk producers greater access to the organised milk-processing sector.
NDP-I would focus on areas with higher potential in the 14 major milk-producing states (namely Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Kerala), which constitute 90 per cent of the milk production. The coverage of NDP-I would, however, be across the country in terms of benefits accruing from the scheme.
