Barhi dates are now being cultivated in India, and one of the most prominent farms where they are cultivated is Gorasiya Farm in Kutch, Gujarat (a region with sandy soil, a desert climate and conducive temperature). The production of the fruit commenced in India about a decade ago, when farmers imported its plant from Israel.

The dates are grown using computerised drip irrigation and fertilizing systems. Packing is done according to standards set by the international and domestic market, with 500g plastic punnets and jars for malls and premium outlets, and 1-5kg green, eco-friendly corrugated boxes, and customised packing for loose and wholesale sales.

“The Indian Barhi date season starts in July and ends mid-August, which gives us advantage of supplying Barhi dates during the Holy Month of Ramadan all over the world this year. We have also created our own market in Europe, “said A R Sharma, Gorasiya Farm’s representative.

In 2014, the holy month commences on June 27. This type of date is eaten fresh while breaking the fast. It turns yellowish golden in colour upon ripening. “Barhi date tissue culture plants from Israel were brought to India about ten years ago, and production on it started in 2008,” Sharma said.

“Now production is increasing year-on-year and gives consistent quality. For example, we at Gorasiya Farms produced around 500 tonne in 2012 and in 2013 our produce totalled around 900 tonne,” he added.

“Apart from our own produce we traded 1,000 tonne dates, mainly in the domestic markets and Europe. That makes us one of the largest suppliers of Barhee dates in India. The Middle-East exports are being explored and shall bring results this year,” Sharma stated.
