In order to boost the food processing industry and upgrade small-scale food industries, a food cluster is likely to come up in Pune this year. A diagnostic study report (DSR) for the same was submitted to the Centre for approval.
An official of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) stated that a meeting was held recently to give a push to the project, which is under review for the last two years. He added that all the food processors and manufacturers around Pune attended it.
“We have submitted the DSR for the food cluster to the Centre for its approval. The food cluster is expected to give the food processing sector in Pune, which is growing at a rapid pace, a boost,” he said.
S S Suravase, general manager, District Industry Centre (DIC), said, “The food cluster is expected to have more than 500 food processing and manufacturing units located in the Pune region.”
“The cluster is proposed for urban and rural areas, and it would strengthen small-scale industries, and help them produce export-quality products with high standards,” he added.
“DIC, along with the National Agriculture and Food Analysis and Research Institute, initiated steps to prepare the diagnostic study report (DSR) for the food clusters, and we have submitted it to the Centre for further approval,” Suravase explained.
B S Rawat, chief executive officer, Dairy Tech India, Bhosari, Pune, said, “The food clusters in both rural and urban Pune will give the food processing industries a boost.”
“More investors would come ahead to be the part of the development. I am hopeful that the Centre will give their approval to the project, and this year the Pune food cluster would become a reality,” he added.
For the development of the food cluster in the region, Rs 15 crore would be provided by the government to the micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSME) as aid, while about 10 per cent of contribution would be coming from members of the cluster.
