Rooibos Tea, the organic tea brand from South Africa, has now entered into the Indian tea market and will soon be available under the brand name Blue Africa Rooibos Tea. Tata Tetley is likely to join hands with the new Indian brand.
This was informed to FnB News at the recently held annual meeting of the South Africa-India Investment and Trade Initiatives (ITI), in Mumbai.
“Rooibos - as the name suggests red colour - is a herbal beverage which is commonly found and grown only in Africa and a regional section, towards the area closer to Cape Town, and has its own tale to say,” said Charl Ruchman, MD, Blue Africa.
Ruchman said that the tea was caffeine-free, high on antioxidants and contained those elements which were good for skin, adding that currently the company was eyeing imports to a bigger market like India.
“We want to have a direct channel to India. It was found that US imported Rooibos Tea to their country and exported to India,” said Ruchman. He added that some of the companies were already in talks with them for the same like Society tea, one of the tea brands.
Further, he mentioned that the tea variety was mainly exported to the Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden, and Poland and was available in five different flavours such as berry, vanilla, natural, cinnamon, citrus and chai.
“Out of the total 300 tonne of production, the country was looking to export nearly 40 tonne of tea to India whereby a bag would constitute around 12 bags of tea and sold for Rs 250. Currently, 20 per cent of its produce is exported to other countries,” Ruchman informed.
However, sources from Tata could not be reached for confirmation.
