The controversial and much-debated genetically-modified (GM) foods issue, witnessed yet another row on Friday when the Madhya Pradesh agriculture minister, Dr Ramkrishna Kusmaria, allegedly stated, “GM foods are non-vegetarian foodgrains.”
According to an official in the MP agriculture ministry, “the minister made this statement based on a personal view with regard to the Bt Maize trial which is to be carried in the state.”
Dr Kusmaria reportedly stated that his department would neither allow the trial nor the use of GM seeds, based on the fact that GM seeds contained genes of bacteria and other micro-organisms, which were implanted in an unnatural way and hence could cause side-effects.
The official confirmed that the minister had filed a statement against the Bt Maize crop.
