Spencer's Retail Limited, the master franchisee for the US-based Au Bon Pain in India, has now chalked out plans for consolidating its presence in Bangalore and expanding its footprint pan India.
The brand ventured into the Indian market starting with Bangalore in December 2009. It introduced the concept of fast, casual and healthy dining.
"India is an upcoming economy and also has a lot of international chains running successfully. We chose Bangalore in particular as it is a cosmopolitan city with a consumer base that is globally exposed and has evolved tastes. The investment for this brand in India has come from the internal group funding and for the first year the investment has been Rs 25 crore. A bulk of investment has gone into the preparation of the back-end infrastructure which covered installation of a hi-end manufacturing plant and logistics," Subbanna Kannur, business head, Au Bon Pain - India, told F&B News.
"The first year of expansion was limited to Bangalore and we spent a lot of time and effort doing research, getting the right menu mix, finding the right blend of international classics and Indian flavours. For the coming year, we are not only looking at consolidating our presence in the city of Bangalore but also looking at expanding to the other metros in India."
"At Au Bon Pain, our focus has been on providing a huge variety, getting the right blend of international and Indian menu mix. With the title 'America's healthiest restaurant' also comes the responsibility of maintaining the highest standards of health and nutrition in our recipes and a focus on hygiene. The main idea is to provide all of this at rates which provide value for money. For the past 2 years we have been delivering this and this is our strength," he added.
Au Bon Pain is a US-based bakery café chain with more than 250 outlets in the USA, South Korea, Middle East and Thailand.
