“The dairy industry has a bright future in India and is a viable alternative for farmers because of low cost of production, easy availability of finance, low dependency on monsoon and quick cash flow. Also, the waste from the dairy farm can be used as manure or in biogas plants, making it a profitable industry,” said Dr Hardeep Kumar, principal secretary, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department, Government of Haryana, at an International Conference on “Emerging Opportunities in the Dairy and Poultry Sector,” organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the CII Northern Region  Headquarters as part of the CII AgroTech 2010. CII Agro Tech 2010 was held at the Parade Ground, Chandigarh, from December 3-6, The conference highlighted the investment opportunities emerging across the dairy value chain and some of the initiatives being taken by key players, with focus on current trends in the dairy industry.

Dr P G Phalke, consultant, CLFMA of India, stated that there was a huge potential for capturing the large unorganised market base in dairy. There was a need to improve the milk production and infrastructure, for linking procurement to manufacturing facility, processing and packaging innovations taking into account local preferences and improving technology.

Talking about dairy and poultry industry of New Zealand, Cliff Fuller, trade commissioner, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, said, “Some factors have helped in the growth of dairy industry in New Zealand, like, marketing, attention given to the quality and hygiene of milk products and livestock, role of the government and leadership, new processing technology, increased research and productivity, consolidation of the industry and role of corporates. For the growth of the dairy industry, New Zealand is keen to collaborate with  India,” he added.

Giving the Indian perspective, Shiva Mudgil, dairy analyst, Rabo India, said, “Our country is the largest milk producer in the world. But, soon it is expected that we will need more than what this sector can supply. Hence, our focus should be on the improvement of dairy sector in India. For this, imports can be a short-term solution. Also, the key is to increase the milk production of cattle in India along with an increase in value added products here.”
