For India's food packaging industry, beverage packaging is the most challenging execution and similarly for the beverage industry, packaging is the mantra to sell.

Thus a synergy between the two could prove to be the most ascertained money spinner for a food business operator engaged in these categories.

To give this synergy a platform two mighty names of the trade fair industry, Messe München GmbH, organisers of the popular drinktec, and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, known for the famous interpack, have signed a cooperation agreement to hold drink technology India and International PackTech India together in future.

Messe München GmbH will organise drink technology India, the international trade fair for beverage and liquid food technology; Messe Düsseldorf GmbH and its subsidiary Messe Düsseldorf India Pvt. Ltd are responsible for International PackTech India, the international trade fair and conference for the packaging and packaging processing industry.

The two organisers will be bundling their knowledge and expertise and utilising this synergy for creating one of the leading food and beverage and packaging technology shows in the country.

The two events will be organised on November 18 -20, at Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. Around 220 exhibitors (130 for Pack Tech 2010 and 90 for drinktec India 2010) have enrolled for the show. Around 24 major German companies are exhibiting at these trade shows.

The two shows would bring on a platform the high-end German technology and the potential Indian customers to cater to the wide segment of food and beverage processing and packaging industry.

This year country pavilions from Germany, Italy and France are confirmed. The German government is sponsoring an official German Pavilion supported by German Engineering Federation.

Companies like KHS, Reliance Industries, Sidel India, Rane Rao Reshamia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd, Siemens, Krones, Nichrome, Pakona Engineering Pvt. Ltd, Multipak Ltd have confirmed their presence as exhibitors.

Today approx. 1.3% of global beverage consumption falls upon India. Market analysts expect that beverage sales will nearly double till 2014 (from 2009). The growth rate for alcoholic drinks from 2009-2014 would be around 65% and for soft drinks in the same period to around 80%.

"Now as the beverage market is highly dynamic and the competition is fierce, manufacturers always require adapted technology to obtain the best results possible. There are a lot of similarities in the technology for beverages and liquid food, which is reflected in the long list of drinktec's exhibitors and visitors," said VDMA MD Rajesh Nath.

VDMA, the German food and packaging machine trade association, Frankfurt (www. vdma.com), acts as a general ally for drinktec, drink technology India, Interpack and International PackTech India.

Germany is capable of producing a wide range of technology from basic up to the state-of-the-art. On the other hand, India produces basic machinery in the country and relies heavily on the European nations for the high end technology. These facts corroborate the interdependence of India and Germany on each other in the field of trade in technology.

Said Rajesh Nath, " Though India produces basic machinery, its rising population would eventually demand state-of-the-art technology which would need to be imported. The amount of investment in R&D happening in Germany scores highest in the world."

The exhibitors' profile of drinktec India would include those from aseptic systems, filling and packaging technology, packaging materials, PET technology, process technology and process automation, raw materials/additives and restaurant and catering equipment.

drinktec India would be entering its third edition after 2007 ( there was a gap in 2009 and the 2008 edition was overshadowed by the terrorist attacks), whereas Pack Tech would be entering its 6th edition this year.

In the last drinktec India show around 42 exhibitors enrolled for the fair from 11 countries.

Previous years' experience tells that many companies will be using the platform for launching new products.

The last drinktec show had the highest participation from the water industry followed by the soft drink industry. The clear focus of drinktec India this year would be on food and beverage liquid food technology and the exhibition forum would be divided into several theme blocks: Brewing and beverage technology; Beverage packaging in PET; Caps and closures for beverages; Water treatment; Technology in dairy processing; and Hotfill technology.

VLB of Berlin, one of the world´s leading research and teaching institutions in the brewing sector, is organising a three-day seminar at drinktec on fundamental and highly topical themes in brewing and beverage technology. The seminar entitled "Production of Beer and Beverages - Technology - Filling - Quality" will be addressed to managers and employees on the production side in breweries and beverages manufacturers. Whereas, for packaging a conference on " Packaging & Sustainibility" will be held alongside the exhibition.

Himanshu Gupta, head of projects, Messe Dusseldorf, India, said, " The volume of India's packaging industry is around $ 16 billion and it is among the top five packaging markets. The growth which is currently at 12% is predicted to accelerate to 15%. Organised wholesale and retailing are playing a major part in the growth process. drinktec India and International PackTech India will be the shows which will act as conduit for technology transfer."

Food and beverage and pharmaceuticals are the drivers for India's packaging industry. Thus the visitors profile who would be attending the show would predominantly be from the two sectors for the International Pack Tech event along with others.

India is estimated to become the second largest packaged food market in Asia, second to China, with a trade volume up to 25 million tonnes by 2014.

In the predicted 25 million tonnes market, dairy alone is anticipated to reach a trade volume of 15.6 million tonnes. Thus Pack Tech would also be the fair for those who intend to gain maximum mileage from beverage and packaging industry.

"The total export volume in 2009 of food processing and packaging machinery was 22.5 billion euro and Germany led the exports with 26 % followed by Italy at 22%. Also, the world production of packaging machinery in 2008 was estimated to be 23.6 billion euro. A major portion of this came from Europe. Germany again led the share with 23% followed by Italy 16%. Asian countries like Japan and China contributed 11 % and 6% respectively. The US contributed around 6%," said Rajesh Nath.

The dominance of German technology in food processing and packaging industry is an established fact. It produced packaging and food processing machinery worth 9.2 bn. euro in 2009, out of which export accounted for 5.9 billion euro, which was exceeding 80%. Packaging machinery production in Germany was worth 3,068 million euro in 2009.

Packaging machinery produced globally for beverages alone was worth 1350 million euro in 2009. It is among the top five producing countries in the world market for food processing machinery with a share of 15 % in the total world production of 22.3 billion euro. It is followed closely by Chin
