OVERVIEW

Steady growth of dairy equipment industry in India

Irum Khan, Mumbai

The dairy industry has stood a model to the various dairy programmes for nations around the world. Dr Kurien's white revolution has been eagerly absorbed by most of the progressive dairies in their attempt in taking up the challenge of growth and development.

With 105 million tonnes and a dream to reach 180 million tones by 2020, India surely is the dairy leader, but for it to be accommodated in the bracket of the best there are still ladders to climb weaknesses to overcome.

Indian dairy industry's impact in the international market is limited and this is evident from the fact that there is no single Indian company which hits the list of world top 20.

Once reason for the low global impact of Indian dairy is the quality of milk which is now being slowly addressed. With demand increasing by around 4 % every year and procurement happening at 3.2 %, every year India adds 1% deficit to the demand-supply gap.

The quality of raw milk in India is quite poor and the initial bacterial count runs into millions. This is because milk is a very quickly perishable commodity and unhygienic milking, storage, handling are issues recurring in the operations of the industry. Also, the industry being majorly dominated by the doodhwalla bhayyas (65%), who conveniently follow the traditional method of dairy, has only aggravated the problem of inertia for the industry.

Says Ankur Shah, director, Krishna Industries, " We do not have a clean system of milk collecting machines. We also do not have sufficient milking machines ( which is around 1% against total requirement). The government or the cooperatives need to incentivise farmers for using these machines."

Most of the dairy units are now looking into the improvement of sanitary and hygienic conditions by adopting ISO certification as well as HACCP programmes. The Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary (SPS) measures are becoming mandatory for export and serious efforts have to be made to achieve the international standards of quality.

Another reason for low quality milk is that the temperature all over the country is quite high during most part of the year which spoils the milk faster.

It is, therefore, essential to boost clean milk production and hygienic milk handling by adopting milking by machines, use of aluminum or stainless steel (SS) milk cans, use of bulk milk coolers etc.

India's recent progress in dairy equipment manufacture has been remarkable. Though it still imports advanced machinery from regions like Europe and Italy around 70-80% of machinery is now being produced in India.

However, dairy equipment industry in India is still confined to certain categories such as road tankers, storage tanks, bulk milk coolers, small homogenisers, milk pasteurisers, milk vending machines and liquid milk packaging system etc.

Equipment for packaging of butter, cheese, paneer and other traditional products needs attention with an eye on the industry's need for small and large-scale operations.

There are very few companies which are consistently contributing towards the uplift of the equipment industry.

Goma Engineering founded in 1982 is one such company which has affirmed its strong presence in dairy machinery industry with specialisation in designing, manufacturing and marketing,

High pressure reciprocating pump & accessories for cleaning, cutting, removing, de-scaling, testing, spraying, reverse osmosis, liquid transfer are a few of the popular Goma products. It has supplied over 1000 high pressure pump units all over India and also exported to Australia, Russia, Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Tanzania etc.

Another important name in machinery industry is DeLaval (India) Limited. DeLaval is one of the three companies in the Tetra Laval Group, a private group that started in Sweden.

DeLaval provides solutions in more than 100 countries worldwide and meets with over 10,000 milk producers on their farms. According to a recent study by the Danish Agricultural Advisory Service (Dansk Landbrugsrådgiving), the DeLaval VMS ranks among the top Automatic Milking Systems (AMS) in the world for energy efficiency best practices.

"Milk quality and quantity starts with optimal performance of all the milking equipment," says DeLaval Vice President Business Area Aftermarket & Services Tim Nicolaï.

The latest release of the DeLaval voluntary milking system, the VMS 2010, was awarded "Agricultural Machine of the Year 2010" at the Polish agricultural trade fair Agrotech (March 12-14 2010).

The newest milking robot further enhances smart control over milk production while reducing input costs, exactly what dairy farmers need in times of volatile milk prices worldwide,

VMS 2010 has hit the markets at a time of increasing demand and interest for automation technology in the dairy industry. To respond to that trend and cater to farmers' needs with automation technology that enhances dairy farm profitability and milk quality.

The popular smart farming initiative launched by the company in 2008 was aimed at influencing and shaping the future of dairy farming today.

DeLava's smart farming is about empowering milk producers with the right decision tools and automation technologies that seamlessly and accurately integrate products, services and knowledge.

With 30 years of experience Nichrome is another company which has managed to leave its strong footprint in India.

International players such as Nestle, Bayer & many more leading groups have an ongoing synergistic partnership with Nichrome. Solutions which are tailor made for a specific product with unique characteristics is being offered by Nichrome in the form of 'purpose built machine' unlike common practice of offering run-of-the-mill standard machine configurations.

Nichrome has joined hands with Reda Spa, Italy, the leading European Food processing solution provider for aseptic milk & beverages to provide total processing and packaging solution under one roof. UHT plants (Skid mounted plants) Capacity: 2000 LPH to 30000 LPH capacity suitable for Milk & Beverages by Reda Spa, Self cleaning separators /Clarifiers: Capacity: 1500 Liters per hour to 35000 Liters/hour capacity, Bactofuges: Capacity 5000 LPH to 35000 LPH, Automatic in line standardizers, Reda CS series Evaporators for low temperature whey concentration, Automatic Dairy plants are a few of the equipment achievements of Nichrome.

Recently Nichrome launched a 24-hour mobile service facility in Hyderabad to cater to servicing calls in and around Hyderabad. It has appointed a mobile van with critical spares and expert engineers on board. The service is available on call, round the clock. The Mobile Service Facility on Wheels is the first of its kind in the country in the packaging sector to cater to the breakdown calls of seed industry during the season.
