The second edition of the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair will be held on November 4-6, 2009, at the Convention & Exhibition Centre. Organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council, exhibitors of wine, beer and spirits have the opportunity to gauge Asian tastes as well as test consumer reaction to new products. The benefits of direct consumer contact are far-reaching as Hong Kong is the trendsetter for the mainland China market. The fair also provides a trading platform for related products. These include premium food products such as cheese, ham, olives, nuts, bread, caviar, biscuits and chocolates, as well as glassware and the many other accessories associated with fine living. The fair will be preceded by the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival being organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board on October 31 to November1, 2009.

Hong Kong's role as the wine trading and distribution hub of Asia was boosted recently by the removal of duty on wine, making Hong Kong the only major economy to have no wine duties and no sales tax. January to September 2008 figures showed that Hong Kong's wine imports are soaring; they were up 87% over the same period in 2007. The Chinese mainland and Hong Kong comprise more than 60% of Asia's wine market and will become the world's eighth largest market.

The second edition of Wine Fair will see the launch of the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit competition. For the first time in Asia, an industry event presents a prestigious and professional competition which will raise the bar of wine appreciation in the region. Participants will have an outstanding showcase while finalists and winners will have a higher international profile as well as an additional marketing tool.

The debut event in 2008 brought 240 exhibitors from 25 countries into contact with 8,758 visitors from 55 countries, and 10,000 public visitors. Hong Kong is ideally positioned for this annual fair as it has no wine or spirits production of its own and thus impartially supports the promotion of these from all over the world.

Over 25 wine tasting sessions were held in the 2008 fair to a very positive response. In 2009, vineyards and wine merchants will once again be able to have dedicated tasting sessions, to share with professional buyers and educate wine lovers on their wine and wine regions.
