Bosky Christopher, Mumbai
dustries reveal an expanding product variety and improved packaging. Packaging industry plays an important role in food industry. It is the right packaging of product that appeals the eyes of consumer whose purchase decision is now taken in seconds standing in front of the shelf rather than that of conventional kirana system.

"In the present scenario packaging plays a very crucial role which is far from the traditional role. Now with growing consumerism, the packaging and the technological advances made, packaging has to offer good shelf life to the product, "buy me" signal and appeal to the consumer on shelf space, create good brand equity, make it tamper proof and pilfer proof," said Janhavi Dhariwal, executive director, Dhariwal Industries Ltd, which manufacturers the Manikchand brand.

In addition to the aesthetic appeal, packaging helps the seller to deliver the product to its customer intact. It also safeguards the aroma, taste and properties with which the product is meant to be delivered to the consumer.

"In earlier days the role of packaging was only to deliver the product intact. Even the packaging cost was very small. However today, the role of packaging has broadened. The cost of packaging is around 10% in total cost cycle. This itself speaks about its significance," said Anubhav Chaturvedi, KHS Machinery Pvt Ltd.

Dhariwal Industries believes in technology and optimisation of solutions for packaging needs. "So we have invested in top end of technology in terms of equipment, we always upgrade our facilities as per market needs and have put in best manufacturing practices to deliver quality, consistency and innovative products to our customer at optimum cost. We advise and give suggestions to our customers which help them making continuous improvements," said Dhariwal.

Solution providing capability, years of experience in this field, understanding the requirement of global/ domestic players, capability to provide strong after sales backup to the customer make KHS Machinery distinctive from other players.

Packaging industry has undergone significant transformation over the years. "The retail boom will further enhance the growth," said Dhariwal. Retail business is the new buzzword and the retail opportunity is estimated at $300 bn. Thus the emerging trends in the packaging industry will be the one which will address the issues like presentation and aesthetics, increased shelf life, carrying and storage ease, etc.

But the major change that is taking place is upgradation of technology at par with the best in the world. "Lot has been done to enhance the value of the product packed. We have already crossed the first phase i.e. the phase of awareness of packaging. Now the phase has come where the need is of upgrading ourselves to reach the global standards and practices," said Chaturvedi.

The packaging industry has been growing at a fast pace. Dhariwal attributed fast growing middle class population, increase spending capacity, demand for quality and attractive packaging, and performance based packaging demands towards this commendable growth.

Growth of any industry can directly be linked to the supply demand cycle. The factors for growth according to Chaturvedi are changing life style and increase in disposable income, nuclear structure of the families, changing profile of the society, young population of the country (approx 45% between age of 25 to 45 years), opening up of economy and advent of global players, acceptance of change by rural market, etc.

On the future of Indian packaging industry, Dhariwal said, "With the level and the speed at which technological upgradation is happening and more and more professionally managed companies are making its mark felt, I am sure within next five years India will be major export hub for packaging materials."
