IPVS Trade Fair, an International Exhibition and Conference focused on Industrial Pumps, Valves and Systems will be held at HITEX Exhibition Centre in Hyderabad, from October 7-9, 2007. For more details: Tel: 022 2419 7420; www.pumpsandsystemsindia.com

The Indian industrial pumps & valves has been a mature market for many years. The market is significant not only for the size and pace of domestic demand, but also as an outsourcing option for pumps, valves, components and associated systems. The world's leading technologies in the field of pumps and valves have been well-absorbed and blended with the traditional engineering skills evident in the rich art and culture of India.

The pumps market, especially that in the agricultural segment, is dominated by the unorganised sector which offers products as much as 30-40% cheaper than that by the organised players. The domestic demand for pumps is correlated to investments in industries such as oil and gas, petroleum, mining, construction and the farm sector. The industrial segment is the niche of the organised players as the requirements are more technology-intensive.

According to Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association (SIEMA) president C R Swaminathan, there was more than 50% increase in the number of BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) licence-holders producing borewell submersible pump sets in 2004 as compared to the previous year - 65 licensees in 2004 as against 40 in 2003 - with a corresponding increase in BIS-marked products - from 1.3 lakh in 2002-03 to 1.95 lakh in 2003-04. There was a similar increase in the production of BIS-marked submersible motors and in the number of BIS-licensed producers.

Coimbatore, an industrial district in Tamil Nadu, has nearly 4,000 registered factories, some 300 large and medium units, over 30,000 small-scale industries, and over 4,500 cottage industries, besides several village and agro-based units. One of the 10 most industrialised districts in the country, it supplies 60% of all pumps used in India, 40% of motors, and a significant percentage of auto parts.

Coimbatore's industrial revolution began with pumps and even today it is the main source of supply to most of India. Only organised players have the ability and the technical expertise to provide quality products to handle complex processes in the industrial segment. KSB is one of the leading organised players, with Kirloskar Brothers, BHEL and Sulzer India in competition. The margins are wafer-thin in products due to the tough competition.

Fisher Pumps Private Limited (part of the Sharp Tool group, started by K K Ramaswamy in 1967) is the largest producer of domestic pumps in the country. The company produces over 40 types of pumps, including mini-mono-blocks, centrifugal submersibles, and jet and special pumps for open wells.

Suguna Pumps, started in 1958 by C G Ramaswamy, began with electric motors and then diversified into pumps. Half of its products are aimed at the domestic-use sector, followed by agriculture. The Rs 90-crore company has a separate R&D division which focuses on efficiency, design (to decrease weight) and materials management (to decrease cost and corrosion).

Another major player in the pump industry is AquaSub Engineering, which makes the Texmo brand of domestic and jet pumps and borewells and submersibles. Also popular are the Aquatex brand of agricultural mono-block pumps, open-well submersibles and electric motors. The company also has an international brand called `Atx'. AquaSub has bagged the national export award in the last four years.

KSB Pumps is one of the major players in the organised pumps market. The company makes pumps, valves and also takes up projects on turnkey basis. KSB Pumps also manufactures process pumps, boiler feed pumps, sewage pumps, sea valves besides submersible pumps.

Kirloskar Brothers manufactures and exports pumps and takes up turnkey water management and irrigation projects. KBL derives close to 50% of its revenues form lift irrigation projects, which is the fastest growing segment. The company has supplied to projects such as Sardar Sarovar Nigam and lift irrigation projects in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. KBL Limited has been involved in water management in India ever since it made its first pump eight decades ago. KBL is the pioneer and the largest manufacturer and exporter of water handling equipment in the country, and has built some of the largest water supply and irrigation projects. It has worked in association with leading water management consultants and companies worldwide for the use of water in public and industrial applications.

Shakti Pumps manufactures energy efficient stainless steel submersible pumps in India. It sells the products under `Shakti' brand in domestic as well as in international market. Globally, the market for pumps is pegged at $27 billion growing at 4-5 per cent. The global market is estimated to grow to $49 billion by 2016. Grundfos of Denmark is the largest manufacturer of energy efficient submersible pumps.
