Wheat procurement by the government in this marketing year has so far been less than the target.
Wheat procurement for the Rabi marketing year 2025-26 in major wheat producing states across the country has either been completed or is in the final stages. This year, the Centre had set a target of purchasing 312 lakh metric tonne of wheat in the country. Compared to this target, so far 256.31 lakh metric tonne of wheat has been purchased in the Central pool.
Last year, till April 30, 205.41 lakh metric tonne of wheat was purchased in the country.
The biggest contribution in this is from five major states Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and UP.
According to the Central Food and Public Distribution Department, wheat has been purchased from a total of 21.03 lakh farmers this year. Till April 30, a payment of Rs 62,156 crore has been made to the farmers.
The Centre had fixed the support price of wheat at Rs 2,425 this year. The Madhya Pradesh Government had increased the price to Rs 2,600 per quintal by giving a bonus of Rs 175. This is the highest bonus ever in Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan had increased the price to Rs 2,575 by giving a bonus of Rs 150.
Shankar Thakkar, secretary, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), has said that the Central Government had given a target of procuring 312 lakh metric tonne of wheat this year, which has not been achieved yet. A few more days are left for procurement but the chances of achieving the target are low.
“The highest procurement this year has been from Punjab. After Punjab, Madhya Pradesh has reached the second position. As of April 30 this year, 19 lakh metric tonne more wheat has been procured in the country as compared to last year. As of April 30, the total wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh has reached 67.57 lakh metric tonne. Last year, the total wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh was only 48.39 lakh metric tonne. Wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh is to continue till May 5. However, slot booking has now stopped. In the next four-five days, the wheat procurement figure in Madhya Pradesh is expected to reach 75 lakh metric tonne,” said Thakkar.
