The USFDA found Salmonella contamination in Everest Garam Masala, Everest Sambhar Masala, and Maggi Masala ae Magic. These products were manufactured in India and not approved for sale in the US. However these products were imported to the United States and the products were distributed to retail stores in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York starting on March 16, 2023.
Following the development, Amin Trading LLC, initiated a recall on June 1, 2023, and confirmed the presence of Salmonella in the spices. All remaining stock in their possession was destroyed under USFDA supervision to ensure consumer safety. Given the prolonged shelf life of spices, there is a concern that some consumers may still have these products in their homes. The USFDA issued an advisory against using the contaminated spices and urged consumers to dispose them of properly.
The USFDA has taken steps to investigate the situation further. The foreign manufacturer of Everest Garam Masala and Everest Sambhar Masala has been contacted and has promptly issued a recall notice. Additionally, the USFDA is in contact with the manufacturer of Maggi Masala ae Magic for investigation. Import Alert #99-19 has been invoked by the FDA, subjecting these contaminated spice products to 'Detention Without Physical Examination Of Food Products Due To The Presence Of Salmonella.'
