Traders oppose 6 months extension to remove temp related info on oil pkgs

The Edible Oil Traders’ Confederation has opposed the move to give six months extension to edible oil companies to remove the ‘temperature’ related weight/volume info on edible oil packages. According to Shankar Thakkar, president of the confederation, the edible oil companies were allegedly selling packaged oil in reduced quantities based on ‘temperature’.

“We have demanded the Government to stop this system of weighing the pack based on edible oil temperature and urged instead to weigh packages on ‘pure/net quantity/volume’. Subsequently the Government has issued directions to the edible oil companies to use ‘pure/net volume/weight’ criteria instead of ‘temperature’ based weight/volume of the package, wherein the last date for compliance with the Government order was January 29. However the Government has extended the compliance time by six months,” said Thakkar, while adding that the Government should roll back its order to extend the timeline and immediately start compliance with the order asking edible oil companies to weigh packages on the basis of net/pure volume.

The Government in July last year had given six months time to the edible oil companies including manufacturers, packers and importers, to adhere with the requirement that volume of packed oil should be based on ‘net volume’ rather than temperature.

According to the order issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs, the date for compliance with the order was extended after receiving a request from the stakeholders to use the stock of printed packages. The DCA has also asked its officials to make companies aware about the edible oil packaging, which should ideally be done at 30 degree Celsius.

According to experts, if edible oil is packed at 21 degree C, the weight of the pack would be 919 gm and if oil is packed at 60 degree C, the weight of the pack will be 892.6g.

Thakkar has stated that the decision to remove temperature based weight/volume of packaged oil was taken as several complaints were made to the Consumer Affairs Department and also under the Metrology Rules, weight/volume can only be measured based on ‘actual (net/pure) volume/weight' not based on variable temperature.
