The Edible Oil Traders Confederation has opposed the use of GM crops for the purpose of edible oilseeds production in India. Shankar Thakkar, the president of the Confederation, in a statement has opposed a proposal put forward by MP Sharad Pawar, who was Union Minister for Agriculture between 2004 and 14. Pawar was speaking at his ‘Party’ forum at Amravati in Maharashtra wherein reportedly the former agriculture minister advocated the use of GM crops and also sought changes in certain observations by the Supreme Court of India that were against the use of GM crops. Thakkar has said that the advocacy for Genetically Modified crops was a no-go area. Meanwhile to support his arguments, Pawar gave examples of edible oil imports to India which are produced in Argentina, Brazil and other countries using GM seeds. According to Thakkar, Pawar suggested that India should allow use of GM crops to expand the oilseeds production and for that the ban on experimentation of the GM crops should also be revoked. Thakkar has said that if GM crops were allowed then it would have a bad impact on the local biodiversity. Any decision in this direction should be taken with utmost care. “Government do allow import of edible oil, which are produced from GM, and we demand that such oil should be labelled as a product of GM crop,” said Thakkar.
