In a major boost to agriculture in Vijayapura, Karnataka, two new lift irrigation schemes are set to bring water to nearly 24,000 acres of high-altitude farmland.
The project, with a combined allocation of Rs 235 crore from the State Government, will benefit ten historically water-scarce villages under the Babaleshwar branch canal system. These include Nidoni, Nagaraj, Dashyal, Halagani, Kakhandaki, Tiganibidari, Yekkundi, Hokkundi, Arjunagi, Hebbalatti, Kumathe, Kalabilagi, Gothe, Gadyal, and Todalbagi.
Major Industries Minister and Vijayapura district in-charge MB Patil, who secured the funding, launched the project and expects it to be completed within two years. "As of now, we have taken water up to a height of 640 metres to the river level. However, Nidoni and other villages were deprived of water as they are located at a height of 650-652 metres to the river level. With these 5a and 5b, water can be lifted by jack well," he said.
The viability of the projects has been approved by Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Lift 5a and 5b, with a Rs 127.1 crore allocation, will irrigate 10,037 acres through a pipeline distribution network of 124.7 km and 13.7 km respectively. An additional Rs 108 crore has been sanctioned for Distributary Canal No. 15 and its network, covering 13,118 acres. This lift irrigation initiative is expected to significantly improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods in the region, long affected by inconsistent water access.
