New circular issued for appointment of Chairperson, FSSAI

The Union Health Ministry has issued a new circular for appointment of Chairperson, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, superseding the previous circular published in April 2022.
The circular reads, “Applications are invited to fill up the post of Chairperson, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The FSSAI was established as a statutory body under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (No. 34 of 2006) for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The Chairperson of the FSSAI is to perform such duties and functions and exercise such powers as prescribed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations made there under. The head office of the FSSAI is in Delhi.”
For Chairpersonship of FSSAI, the applicants should be persons of eminence in the field of food science or persons from administration who have been associated with the subject and are either holding or have held a position not below the rank of Secretary to the Government of India.
Besides, relevant work experience related to Central/ State Regulatory Bodies would be a desirable qualification for the position.
And the Chairperson shall hold office for a term of three years from the date on which he/she enters upon the office and shall be eligible for re-appointment for a further period of three years or till he/she attains the age of 65 years whichever is earlier.
