As a part of the government of India’s recent initiative to observe Swachchhata Pakhwada, the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI) organised an number of events. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, minister of food processing industries, launched a Web-based system for the submission of documents for the release of grant-in-aid under the Scheme for Integrated Cold Chain and Value-added Infrastructure.

At the Swachchhta Pakhwada, a Swachchhta pledge was taken. Essay and debate competitions were organised for MoFPI employees and there was a drive to weed out old files/papers. At a meeting in Panchsheel Bhavan, which houses the ministry, Avinash Srivastava, secretary, food processing industries, sensitised the promoters of cold chain projects on the importance of swachchhta and hygiene in their project areas.

The National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), a deemed university under MoFPI, organised events like street vendor sensitisation camps, a cleanliness and hygiene drive on the campus and in the hostel and a swachchhta awareness rally.

The Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT), Thanjavur (another institution under the ministry), observed Swachchhta Pakhwada through a cleanliness drive and beautification and tree planting activities within the campus. It organised activities like an essay competition, workshops, food safety awareness camp for street vendors, skits, etc., to highlight the benefits of swachchhta.

Industry bodies like the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), PHD Chamber of Commerce and the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) organised several programmes and workshops to create awareness on good hygiene practices.

Web-based document system
Launching the software, Badal said that the robust e-governance tool for online filing of claim for the release of grant to a project was an important initiative towards the Digital India campaign.

She said it would help in the effective monitoring of the progress of the project and ensure transparency in the disbursal of funds to implementing agencies with the reduction of supporting documents and paper work.

Earlier, similar software was launched for the mega food park scheme. Based on the experience gained, the software was upgraded and launched for the cold chain scheme. It is an investor-friendly initiative taken by the ministry. Badal launched the new-look website of the ministry.
