Kerry & Monell Chemical Senses Centre inaugurate Stephen Manheimer Scholarship in Flavour Science
Monday, 02 June, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Wisconsin, USA
Kerry Group and the Monell Chemical Senses Centre are honouring the significant contributions of Stephen Manheimer to the flavour and food industry during his 60-year career with the establishment of the Stephen Manheimer Scholarship in Flavour Science.

The scholarship is intended to support the next generation of flavour scientists in advancing the understanding of important aspects of taste perception; bridging research perspectives from academia and industry, to drive discovery and real-world applications.

Manheimer is best known for the pivotal role he played in the development of his family company, J. Manheimer Inc., and for the key contributions he made to the group’s success in becoming a global leader in the taste industry over the past two decades. Over that entire period, he has been widely recognised across the industry, for his expertise, passion and keen interest in important scientific advances within the field.

Monell has played a key role in supporting advances in flavour science, as the world’s only independent, non-profit scientific institute dedicated to interdisciplinary basic research on the senses of taste and smell. Research at the centre has included a focus on the cellular and genetic underpinnings of taste and smell, and the complex interactions between our chemical senses and overall human health and wellbeing.

The company, a global leader in taste and nutrition, has a long history of successfully commercialising new flavour science, bringing to market innovations that serve key consumer needs, such as with its TasteSense technology, which enables a significant reduction in the salt and sugar content of everyday foods, while maintaining consumer-preferred taste.

The scholarship is designed for students pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral Degree in flavour science with an expressed interest in pursuing a career in the flavour or food industry, and provides for up to two years of study.  Funding is intended to cover tuition, a research stipend, and expenses related to executing a research project at the Monell Centre under the guidance of a faculty member.
