ICT, AFST Mumbai chapter organise food entrepreneurship devpt workshop

The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai [under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP)] and the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) [AFST(I)] Mumbai Chapter co-organised a one-day workshop titled Food Entrepreneurship Development: Dare to Dream. The objective of the workshop was to guide students and budding entrepreneurs on various aspects of business.

It commenced with the lighting of the lamp. Welcoming the attendees, Uday Annapure, professor and head, food engineering and technology, ICT, and Prabodh Halde, president, AFST(I), Mumbai chapter, explained the activities of ICT and AFST.

Rajesh Sharma, member, National Board for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, was the chief guest at the event. He talked about various policies started by the government and the department of MSME and urged all entrepreneurs to enroll under Udyogaadhar.

The dignitaries on stage released the first issue of this year’s AFST newsletter. Smita Lele, who won the Unch Maza Zoka award (the highest honour for women achievers) for science and technology, was felicitated. Nilesh Lele, secretary, AFST(I), Mumbai chapter, and an alumnus of ICT, raised the vote of thanks for the opening session.

The speakers for the first technical session were Halde, Atul Mardikar (who has over 20 years of experience in the area of dehydration), Anirudh Garg (founder, Institute of Urban Farming and Sustainability) and Girish Karandikar (an ISO consultant).

Halde spoke about various fund-raising options, including venture capital. Mardikar explained how post-harvest losses could be reduced using dehydration techniques. Garg stated that farming was no longer a rural necessity but could be done in an urban set-up as well. Karandikar explained how ISO could be used as a cost monitoring and quality improvement tool rather than just a marketing tool.

The speakers for the second session were Shilpa Mhatre, Vijaykumar Chole, vice-president, BVG Life - Satara Food Park, Bhushan Yengade and Neeta Nair.

Mhatre, whose topic was Know Your Consumer: Science of Knowing Consumer Insights, spoke about the behavioural sciences that govern the buying patterns of buyers. Chole gave a brief about the mega food park and how new entrepreneurs could benefit from the common infrastructure in the Satara Food Park. Yengade spoke about the Brexit phenomenon’s impact on food processing, while Nair spoke about the various compliances for a start-up.

The speaker for the third and final session was brand and marketing guru Hansel D’Souza. He explained how to build a brand. The session showcased three success stories - Vaibhav Tidke (solar-based dehydration), Bhupen Kuvadia (beverage and ready mixes) and Maruti Chapke (founder, Go4Fresh.com, a portal for fresh fruit and vegetables).

The event was attended by 100-plus students. There were 180-plus delegates. Dr Snehasis Chakraborty, assistant professor, ICT, and treasurer, AFST(I), Mumbai, raised a formal vote of thanks.
