Green tea does not help to reduce calories, states Typhoo blender Khan

Green tea is unoxidised tea. Although it does not really help to reduce calories as such, it helps to maintain a good digestion system. This was stated by Razi Khan, master blender, Typhoo (Britain’s third largest tea brand), who was in Mumbai for a tea tasting session hosted by Typhoo Tea India.

Some of the brand’s brews - including Darjeeling, Decaf tea, Lemon and Honey Green Tea and Orange Spicer Fruit Infusion - were introduced at the event. These are already available in the country.

Four new brews - Apple and Cinnamon, Triple Mint (which, as the name suggests, is a combination of three varieties of mint), Chamomile and Berry Blast (a brew containing such berries as blueberry and strawberry) - were also unveiled. These are slated to be launched in September.

The brand - which bears a seal of certification by the Rainforest Alliance (a global non-profit organisation that works to conserve biodiversity) - can boast of a portfolio that comprises five categories of tea, namely black, flavoured, green, infusions and organic range, comprising 26 variants.

“Tea is something which is very personal to us. We just want to enjoy it in our own way. There is a misconception that there is a particular time to drink tea. For me, every time is tea time,” said Khan.

Typhoo’s range of pyramid-shaped tea bags, which will be launched soon, was also showcased at the session. The shape of the bags lend each cup of tea the original aroma of the brew and a flavoursome experience.

Khan said, “The shape of the tea bag does make a difference. The pyramid shape of these tea bags allows the weight of the tea to be down. This helps it to brew better when we pour water on it. It also helps when we dip the tea bag.”

During the session, he brought about afternoon tea, a quintessential British tradition, and going beyond the traditional Indian chai, laid out a variety of teas for different occasions of the day.

“India is really a tea-loving country. No Indian think of starting his/her day without a cup of tea. We here are only trying to do it in a better way; we are taking it from the regular chai to an experience of the aroma and real flavour of tea. India is really taking our efforts seriously, as our market in the country has been growing since our entry in 2008,” Khan said.

Subrata Mukerji, business head, Typhoo Tea India, said, “Since its inception in Britain 110 years ago, Typhoo has not only indulged tea connoisseurs the world over with exotic healthy beverages beyond tea, but also revived the tea drinking experience.”

He added, “We are delighted to host a tea testing session that showcases various types of teas and infusions that can be enjoyed throughout the day, emphasising the importance of the brew to our daily lives, while we continue to enjoy our traditional chai.”

“We, at Typhoo, are proud to redefine the concept of tea drinking by introducing flavours which are unique to the Indian consumer,” Mukerji said.

“What is heartening for me is that Indians are continuously seeking changes in their lifestyles and food habits and experimenting with cuisines and beverages,” he added.

Khan said, “As a tea taster and tea blender, nothing gives me more joy than giving patrons an opportunity to experience a British-style afternoon session.”

“It is amazing that Typhoo has one of the most diverse portfolios, and we are confident that through such sessions, we can transform the Indian palette for teas and also share with our patrons what Typhoo has to offer,” he added.
