Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) has launched Amul Camel Milk in selected markets of Gujarat (namely Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad and Kutch). This is the first time India’s largest dairy player, and the fastest-growing dairy organisation in the world, is launching camel milk in the country.
Camel milk is easy to digest and offers numerous health benefits, the most prominent of which is that it is high in an insulin-like protein, making it beneficial for diabetic persons. It is in use for thousands of years across various cultures, and its benefits even find mention in Ayurvedic texts.
Research articles has also suggested that camel milk is also beneficial for those with dairy allergies as it contains no allergens. Sourced from Kutch, the milk will be available in a 500ml PET bottle priced at Rs 50. It needs to be refrigerated, and has a shelf life of three days. Amul had earlier introduced a chocolate-flavoured variant of camel milk in the market, which continues to receive a good response.
The Bhuj-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Sahjeevan, Kutch District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited and Sarhad Dairy, Kutch have been organising camel farmers. This initiative will give them better prices and will benefit consumers by giving them hygienically-processed, superior quality camel milk.
R S Sodhi, managing director, Amul Federation, said, “We are the first major dairy brand to introduce camel milk for the benefit of camel farmers and consumers alike. It is a proud moment for us to be able to offer superior quality milk that will be useful tool in diabetes management.”
“As an easy-to-digest milk with several health benefits, we believe camel milk will open up a new segment in the market,” he added. It is also noted that the Government of Gujarat has provided subsidies to set up new plants in Kutch district for the processing of camel milk.
It is important to note that GCMMF achieved unduplicated sales turnover of Rs 41,000 crore in 2017-18. Eighty to 85 per cent of the consumer’s rupee is passed back to milk producer members, thus encouraging them to produce more milk.
