FSSAI has issued an order to expand the list of rectifiable labelling information with respect to imported food consignments. It stated that the labelling deficiencies, that can also be rectified now, include the name and complete address of the manufacturer/packer, the lot/code/batch identification, the date of manufacturing and the declaration regarding the food additive.
Suneeti Toteja, director, imports, FSSAI, said, “With a view to facilitate the ease of trade while ensuring food safety, it has been decided that in addition to the labelling deficiencies, for which a special dispensation for rectification has been provided under Regulation 6(4) of the Food Safety and Standards Import Regulations, 2011, another set has been added.”
She added that the deficiencies could be rectified at Customs-bound warehouses before visual inspection or re-inspection by the authorised officer by affixing a single non-detachable sticker or by any other non-detachable means next to the principal display panel without altering or masking the original label information in any manner.
The order explained that for the name and complete address of the manufacturer or packer, if information is missing, then the address may be verified from the relevant document, like invoices, ingredient list, certificates of analysts, bills of entry, etc. Thereafter, rectification may be allowed after taking an undertaking from the importer.
Similarly, the rectification can be done for the lot/code/batch identification, the date of manufacturing and the declaration regarding additives, with an undertaking from the importer verified based on the documents mentioned above.
Currently, under Regulation 6(4) of the Import Regulations of 2017 in case of imported packaged food consignments, a special dispensation on labelling is allowed for the rectifiable deficiencies at the Custom-bound warehouse by affixing a single non-detachable sticker or by any other non-detachable method next to the principle display panel.
These include (a) the name and address of the importer; (b) FSSAI’s logo and license number, (c) vegetarian or non-vegetarian logo, and (d) Category or sub-category along with generic name, nature and composition for proprietary food. It must be mentioned here that the apex food regulator recently decided to reform the food import regulations to ease the food import. and this order was a part of the process.
