The FSSAI has stated that it will not consider ‘applications’ for approval of food products formulated with vitamins or minerals above one RDA level under the Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients Regulations.
The decision was taken on an advice of the FSSAI’s Expert Committee.
“The Expert Committee on non-specified food and food ingredients recommended that products/ingredients formulated with vitamins and/or minerals above one RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) level are more akin to drug and such products/ingredients may not be considered for approval under the Food Safety and Standards (Approval for Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients) Regulations, 2017,” reads a direction issued by the food authority.
The food authority has notified the approval for non-specified food and food ingredient regulations in September 2017 outlaying the specifications for approval of such food products including novel food.
However, the Drug Technical Advisory Board after examining the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommendations, came to the conclusion that vitamins with doses upto one RDA should be regulated under the FSS Act.
It was also observed by the Board that other vitamin preparations having prophylactic and therapeutic claims should be regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
And subsequently the FSSAI’s Expert Committee, after examining the matter, recommended that such products having above one RDA level vitamin/mineral should not be considered for approval by the FSSAI.
