The FSSAI has issued draft Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Amendment Regulations, 2023, defining the limit of certain elements in infant food products that include selenium, iron, manganese and biotin.
The limit of selenium in regulation number 7, 8, and 9 has been set at 5-40 mg per 100 gm. These regulations are related to infant formula (7), milk cereal based complementary food (8), and processed cereal based complementary food (9).
Similarly, in regulation 9, the limit of iron is set at 2-5.65 mg.
In regulation 10 related to Follow-up Formula the limit of biotin is set at 7.50-50mg and 5-175mg for manganese.
The food authority had earlier issued an order in this regard and made these regulations effective from October 1, 2022, with the revised limits of selenium, manganese, iron and biotin.
According to the FSSAI, the limits of these nutrients were revised in view of the representations received from the industry associations regarding difficulty in reformulating and manufacturing infant food products adhering to the level of these trace elements.
FSSAI has asked the stakeholders to send across their suggestions and comment on this draft.
