The apex food regulator has proposed amendment to the FSS (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations to amend the proviso with respect to multi-sourced edible oil, and proposed to remove the condition of Agmark certification for sale of such products.
The amendment proposed to remove the condition that ‘the sealed package (of multi- sourced edible oil) shall be sold or offered for sale only under Agmark certification mark’.
Also, the FSSAI has proposed to add a new proviso in regulation 2.1, in sub-regulation (2.1.1) of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, related to sale of certain admixtures that are prohibited including a mixture of two or more edible oils as an edible oil.
The proviso lay that the restriction on sales of admixtures of edible oil is not applicable on multi- sourced edible oil.
The proviso reads, “Provided also that prohibition in Regulation 2.1.1 (5) (related to a mixture of two or more edible oils as an edible oil) shall remain inoperative in respect of Multi-Source Edible Oil specified under the clause (24) of sub-regulation (2.2.1) of regulation ‘2.2 of Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, and Multi-Source Edible Oil shall not be sold in packages weighing more than 15 litre.”
According to the FSS Regulations, Multi-Sourced Edible Oil means an admixture of any two edible vegetable oils where the proportion by weight of any edible vegetable oil used in the admixture is not less than 20 per cent while the individual oils in the blend shall conform to the respective standards prescribed by these regulations.
