Spar Hypermarket, a part of the Dubai-based Landmark Group, has opened its second store in Coimbatore. The store, located at the Prozone Mall, is the first in a new format, and will be the Bengaluru-based hypermarket chain’s 18th store in India.
The store promises customers innovation-led experiential shopping, backed by technology, for the first time in India.
It covers an area of about 30,000sq ft, and offers a personalised, localised and entertaining shopping experience, evoking the spirit of shopping at the neighbourhood Maligai kadai (kirana or mom-and-pop store).
Rajeev Krishnan, managing director and chief executive officer, Spar Hypermarkets, said, “We understand that over the past ten years, customers have evolved, and so have their shopping aspirations.”
“The larger and organised we grew, we were forgetting the basics of connecting one-on-one with our customers,” he added.
“It is time to innovate beyond transactional operations to creating customer experience that is shaped by both the intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ),” Krishnan said.
“This second store aims to offer an experience that each family member would look forward,” he added.
“Coimbatore has been a great experience for us with our first store in Brookfields Mall,” Krishnan said.
“We believe in inclusive growth, and thus, we are growing the ecosystem as we grow. We have partnered with farmers, fishermen and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in each region,” he added.
The Experience Section is an addition covering the beauty segment, Little Wonders is a segment catering to kids’ products and Four Seasons will display temporary highlights of the season, which includes food and non-food products.
Spar Refresh offers cuisines from multiple regions across India and globally. There is a separate section dedicated to home furnishing and the Freshly section located near the Farmers Market, vending fruits and vegetables and pulses.
Grandma’s Corner has a range of pickles and spices. It also allows grandmothers of the community to interact with customers.
The store offers increased interactivity through technology in collaboration with Bosch. This will help customers navigate the hypermarket at the click of a button.
The virtual reality enables customers to avail a 3D experience of product purchases, especially in the home furnishing section.
The Spar Playpad is a 55-inch multi-touch interactive screen offers infotainment for kids.
The technology team has also improvised the back-end efficiency for faster billing system. There is the home delivery facility through its omni-channel.
Spar operates 18 stores in nine locations across India. The size of its stores in India range between 30,000 to 70,000sq ft.
It currently employs over 2,400 employees and services over three crore customers annually.
