Bamul‘s novel eco-friendly milk packaging in biodegradable sachets marks a pioneering effort to sustainable practices

In a significant move to combat plastic pollution, Bamul has started supplying Nandini milk in biodegradable sachets. Until now, milk was packaged in polythene covers, which are known to be harmful to the environment.

Although the government has enforced a plastic ban, milk packaging had been exempted due to the absence of viable alternatives. Bamul’s initiative marks a pioneering effort to address this gap and promote eco-friendly practices in the dairy industry.

To address the environmental concerns posed by traditional plastic milk sachets, Bamul has launched an initiative to use biodegradable packaging. The newly established mega dairy plant near Shivanahalli, close to Kanakapura off Bengaluru has begun using eco-friendly, decomposable covers.

As part of a pilot project, two lakh biodegradable sachets are being used daily to pack milk and curd in quantities ranging from 200 ml to one litre. Currently, around 20 to 25 lakh plastic covers are used each day, contributing significantly to urban waste.

By transitioning to biodegradable milk packets, Bamul aims to offer a partial but meaningful solution to Bengaluru’s growing garbage problem and set a sustainable example for the dairy industry.

Conventional plastic milk covers can take over 500 years to decompose, posing a serious threat to the environment. In contrast, the new biodegradable sachets introduced by Bamul break down much faster which is within about six months, similar to other organic materials. This shift marks a significant step toward reducing plastic waste and minimising long-term environmental damage, said Bamul.

The eco-friendly covers are made from corn-based material and are produced using advanced imported technology. While these sachets closely resemble traditional polythene covers in appearance, they are slightly more expensive. Despite the added cost, Bamul is committed to moving forward with this initiative in the interest of environmental sustainability.

With this step, Bamul becomes the first milk federation in India to introduce biodegradable packaging for milk. The launch of this initiative was timed to coincide with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5.

This year’s theme—"Beat Plastic Pollution —highlights the urgency of individuals, governments, and businesses to take action to reduce plastic waste and adopt sustainable alternatives. Here Bamul's initiative aligns with this goal by reducing urban plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices.
