Chennai-based Parry Infrastructure Co Pvt Ltd, unit of the $3 billion Murugappa Group, has commenced dedicated food processing SEZ (special economic zone) operations at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The company has invested about Rs 50 crore in the development of SEZ which is spread across 250 acres.
"The Government of India notified this SEZ as first-of-its-kind in Andhra Pradesh. We strategically build food processing zone close to Kakinada sea port as one can source food grains, fruits & vegetables from many agro-input farms and seafood items for processing. Due to its attractive location, many of the Indian food processing exporters have evinced keen interest in setting up their units in this SEZ," KE Ranganathan, managing director, Parry Infrastruture told Food & Beverage News.
The company said that their first customer, M/s Silk Road Sugar Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between the Murugappa Group Co, EID Parry India and Switzerland-based Cargill, had set up a state-of-the-art sugar refinery at an approximate cost of Rs 325 crore and is spread over 100 acres.
"At present, the unit can produce 6,00,000 tonnes of sugar. But observing exports opportunity, Silk Road Sugar has planned to produce about 1 million tonnes in coming 2-3 years. Kakinada SEZ is suitable for edible oil, fruit processing and ready-to-eat processing units as the developed infrastructure offers pollution free zones," Ranganathan added. Further, the company has also decided to develop Food Park in Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka by 2010.
Speaking about Subodh Kant Sahai, who has been promoted to the cabinet rank and retaining the ministry of food processing industries in the new Manmohan Singh government, Ranganathan said, "We are very happy that Sahai had retained Mofpi position. Sahai is suitable for the Indian food processing industry. Currently, the food processing growth is about 12% which will increase to 20% in coming months. International market conditions, rising demand for food, worldwide food scarcity, well-matched US dollar prices are few stuff which will help to boost productivity of processed food in the country."
