Mumbai-based Bombino Express Worldwide has been slapped with a fine of $ 40,000 for illegally importing mangoes and purple yams from India, without the compulsory treatment, according to a PTI report from Washington. Bombino Express tried to smuggle the fruit products into the country last year through the Los Angeles customs declaring them as 'ladies apparel.'

The firm has been warned that it would face a penalty of $ 1.6 million if it violates settlement it has now reached with the California department of food and agriculture not to illegally import mangoes or other fruit products.

"In July 2008, Bombino Express Worldwide imported 34 packages of Indian mangoes and yams that were labelled 'ladies apparel' through Los Angeles International Airport. Airport dogs discovered the packages and prevented the produce from entering the food supply," said a statement issued by the California department of food and agriculture.
