KMF's Nandini brand milk in two more flavours; adds two peda variants

In a major product expansion effort, Nandini Milk Products which is a unit of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), has gone in for an aggressive research and development effort to introduce four novel products including a banana flavoured milk. In fact, the banana flavoured milk is unique and a one-of-a kind offering in the country. Other new products are the milk based sweets: Kesar Peda, Elachi Peda and Elachi flavoured milk.
The new products will provide a boost to the Nandini range. Extensive research has been carried out before development, Dr T Prasanna, general manager, Nandini Milk Products, a unit of KMF, told F&B News.
The Kesar and Elachi Peda contain Kashmiri Mogra and Elachi (cardamom) in natural form along with kesar and elachi oleoresins. While the Kesar Peda is priced at Rs 60, Elachi Peda is available at Rs 50. The energy and fat levels are indicated on the packs to provide consumers the amount of calories being consumed.
The new milk flavours banana and elachi will be made available at Rs 12 per bottle.
The existing range of milk based sweets are priced at Rs 42.
"We took around four months for the product development. Similar peda samples were sought from Anand Adyar Bhavan and Arya Bhavan sweet meat joints ensure our product made a huge difference to consumers in the market in terms of taste and nutrition," informed Dr. Prasanna.
The new product development teams included personnel from the quality control and technology development The taste panel involved the managing director and finance department heads.
Kesar offers the colour and nutrition, but for taste butter scotch and vanilla were added.
Nandini Milk Product range constitutes Mysore Pak, Peda, Premium barfi (badam), Nandini Bites, Gulab Jamu, cashew burfi, besan laddu, sterilized flavoured milk in bottles (badam, pista and rose), badam powder, jamun mix, paneer and khova.
The complete range is available in Bangalore and a few of the products can be sourced at all the 29 districts in Karnataka.
Competition is from MTR, Arya Bhavan, Kanti Sweets, Blue Bell Sweets and Anand Bhavan for the sweets category. In the flavored milk sector, it competes with Nestle and Nilgiris.
There is a separate research and development wing which is aggressive in the development of new product launches. In a month's time, Nandini will make available Khajur (dry dates) burfi. Other initiatives include garlic paneer and paneer khur khure. Research is on to re-introduce rasagolla in a new packaging format.
Nandini Milk Products has also proposed to the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for a Rs 16 crore funding to set up a new factory which is HACCP(Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) compliant and a packaging centre to cater to global markets. This could mean a huge fillip to the Nandini Milk Products sales, added Dr Prasanna.
