fiogf49gjkf0d Godbole Stores, a company based in Dadar, Mumbai, recently launched a ready-to-eat (RTE) range under its brand name, Astronaut Food. It comprises pav bhaji, upma and sheera.
The unique selling proposition (USP) of these products is their shelf life (of three years), which is one of the highest vis-a-vis other products available in the market. If stored in a dry place, it could last for upto twenty years.
Sachin Godbole, the company’s proprietor, said, “These Indian snacks have been introduced keeping in mind convenience, health and the shelf life of the product. They can be prepared within 15 seconds. All one has to do is add hot water to them.”
“The products are best suited to Indians settled abroad and craving for Indian food, and people on a trek. Moreover, they are vegetarian, and have no allergic reaction or side effect,” he added.
They are very affordable, compared to the price point at which they are available at restaurants. For instance, restaurants may charge Rs 100 for 80-90g pav bhaji, whereas our pav bhaji is priced at Rs 150 per 150g pack.
When quizzed about the ingredients it contained and the technology used to prolong the shelf life, Godbole said, “There are no added preservatives or additives. The products are completely natural.”
“The technology adopted to prolong the shelf life of the product is called freeze-drying. It was invented by NASA in 1969,” he added.
“Water, in the form of vapour, is released from the frozen food. Because of this, perishable foods can be stored for a number of years. We introduced this technique for the first time in India, and are using it in the RTE category,” Godbole said.
Godbole Stores has two shops in the United States and four outlets at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai; one at Singapore’s Changi Airport; one in China and one at Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, United States.
One could also order products from the website of the company, which offers free home delivery across Mumbai.
