49% of floors and 66 % of floor drains in kitchens contaminated: Study

fiogf49gjkf0d A recent Ecolab study has found that 49 per cent of floors and 66 per cent of floor drains in commercial kitchens are contaminated with pathogens. Ecolab is a leading player in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services.
The study also showed that regular floor and drain cleaning is not enough to reduce these pathogen levels. Routine restaurant activities, such as moving a box from the floor to a counter, can potentially transfer these pathogens onto food-contact surfaces and onto food.
In response to these studies, Ecolab reformulated its Wash ‘n Walk floor cleaner by adding sanitising chemistry that lowers pathogen levels on commercial kitchen floors. Recently launched in India, the product is a no-rinse floor cleaner and sanitiser registered with the EPA as effective at killing 99.9 per cent of Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus on non-food contact areas with a five-minute contact time. Like the original formula, the product helps reduce slips and falls, saves energy and water (no rinse needed), and makes the cleaning process quick and easy, according to the company.
“Sanitising Wash ‘n Walk redefines kitchen floor cleaning and takes it to a whole new level,” said Mukund Vasudevan, MD & country head, Ecolab India. “This advanced formula can help our customers prevent foodborne illness outbreaks, potentially harming their customers and their business.”
Vasudevan explained that with repeated use, the product lowers pathogen levels and helps keep kitchen floors cleaner, longer with an enzymatic formula that effectively eliminates grease and dirt on floor tile and grout that can collect and harbour bacteria. “This enhanced product provides a sustained solution that goes beyond one-time cleaning to help keep pathogens from coming back. It also reduces feeding and breeding of fruit flies and helps eliminate odours when used in floor drains.”
