Haldiram’s, the company known for Indian offering Indian foods such as sev, mixture, rossogullas and gulab jamuns in both domestic and exports markets, received a minor jolt last week, when it was asked to recall a part of its gulab jamun packs exported to Canada.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the affected product contains gluten, which is not declared on the label. Gluten is known for causing coeliac disease, a condition that leads to damage of the lining of the small intestine, and several other stomach ailments. In fact, CFIA stated, “Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons.”
While the company’s website clearly showed the contents of gulab jamun sans the mention of gluten, Avinesh, Marketing, Haldiram Foods, refused to comment on the same. He added that his company was strict about quality control.
Meanwhile, the CFIA and Quality Natural Foods Ltd, the Canadian importer of the product, which voluntarily induced the recall, have been warning people with allergies to gluten not to consume the said sweet. There has been one reported allergic reaction associated with the consumption of these products, according to CFIA.
As per CFIA, 1 kg packs with batch numbers 8 904004 405910 and all codes and best before dates are affected as also 4 kg packs with numbers 8 904004 405927 and all codes and best before dates are affected.
