Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Food Safety Standards Authority of India has given recognition to the National Food and Feed Reference Laboratory in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. India’s apex regulator released an order in this regard, saying that the laboratory was being recognised for analysis of samples under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011.

The order added that the test analysis certificates issued by the National Food and Feed Reference Laboratory, Kathmandu, for the 21 food products prescribed by FSSAI shall be accepted by the authorities in India dealing in food import.

The list of products for which the testing shall be accepted by the FSSAI include juices, jams, jellies, pickles, Candies, instant noodles, biscuits, infant food, milk, skimmed whole milk powder, condensed milk, ice cream, yoghurt, sweets, processed meat and meat products, ginger, cardamom, turmeric, tea, coffee, honey and fresh fruits and vegetables.

According to the condition set in the FSSAI order, the lab has obtained accreditation from NABL within a year of this order.

“The recognition, however, is subject to the condition that the National Food and Feed Reference Lab of Nepal would obtain accreditation as per ISO/IEC 17025 from NABL for all the parameters as per the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011, within a period of one year,” the order said.

According to a senior FSSAI functionary, this is a part of regional cooperation initiative taken by the FSSAI. Last year, three labs in Sri Lanka were given approval by the FSSAI for the purpose of certification.
