Value addition in fruit crops, production technologies in horti a must

There is a need for processing and value addition in fruit crops, and excellence in production and protection technologies in horticultural crops. This was stated by J S Mahal, director of extension, PAU, and chief guest at the two-day Research and Extension Specialists’ Workshop for Fruits, Mushroom, Agro Forestry, Post-Harvest Management, Farm Power and Machinery, Food Technology and Agricultural Economics, which was held here recently. It was organised by the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU (Punjab Agricultural University).
He also exhorted the extension functionaries to sensitise farmers about agro forestry, mushroom cultivation and cooperative farming, which will help generate additional income.
T S Riar, associate director, skill development, and coordinator of the workshop, informed that apart from lectures on machinery for fruit crops by Mahesh Kumar Narang (Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering); roof-top vegetable nutrition garden model using soilless media by K G Singh (Department of Soil and Water Engineering); weed management in poplar nursery by Navneet Kaur (Department of Forestry), insect pest management in agro forestry by K S Sangha (Department of Forestry), and economic scenario of fruit crops in Punjab by J M Singh (Department of Economics and Sociology), there were special presentations by P K Chhuneja, head, department of entomology, who depicted the decrease of pesticide usage in Punjab through integrated pest management techniques, and Buta Singh Dhillon of the department of plant breeding and genetics, who spoke about how climate change and environment affected paddy production.
