FSSAI approves 19 rapid analytical food testing kits; Launch in pipeline

Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
FSSAI is slated to launch testing kits for food analysis. Nearly 19 rapid analytical food testing kits and devices have been approved by the apex food regulator, that are aimed at enabling the on-ground food safety officers (FSOs) to get quick validated results for tests.

“These kits would come handy for common commodities such as milk and edible oil, which are consumed by the entire country, and which are also the most vulnerable to adulteration,” said an official with FSSAI.

The regulator has also approved guidelines for the rapid testing kits, equipment and methods.

Although the approval is provisional at the moment but soon after conducting a pilot testing of the kits, these will be given to the state governments for handing over to the food safety officers for conducting the rapid tests.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of the first World Food Safety Day (which falls on June 7, 2019), FSSAI will host a programme at its headquarters.

“The programme would include the unveiling of the first and only statue of Mahatma Gandhi on a bicycle, which was the inspiration behind the all-India relay cyclothon, Swasth Bharat Yatra, which commenced on October 16, 2018 and concluded on January 29, 2019,” said the regulator in a statement in New Delhi.

This event would also mark the participation of various stakeholders to join hands in carrying the message of safe food habits further. To celebrate their spirit and tireless efforts, a felicitation ceremony is also being organised for the awardees, including states, food businesses and Eat Right campuses, who disseminated the message of safe food and healthy eating habits amongst citizens.
