It produces plastic and miniplastic casings, used by customers in the production of a wide variety of sausages and cheese, milk, soya or other vegetarian products. The company’s casings have long shelf-life and various types of printing, shades of colours and different calibres, according to customers’ needs. Another important product group is collagen casings where the company’s versatility makes the Devro casing the choice for manufacturers across the globe.
The company was founded as a new business of Johnson & Johnson in 1962. The business name was devised as an acronym of “Development and Research Organisation”, the Johnson & Johnson unit from which it emerged. The company has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since 1993 and was added to the FTSE 250 Index in August 2010. Reported group revenue for 2011was £ 227.7 million (2010: £ 213.6 million), representing an increase of £ 14.1 million, or 6.6 %, over 2010.
Devro is a multinational company. It employs over 2,100 people, with skills and knowledge ranging from chemical and electrical engineering to food technology, meat science and environmental health or maintenance and operation. Some 1,450 of them are based in Europe, with the majority of these at manufacturing and research and development facilities in Jilemnice and Slavkov in the Czech Republic. The majority stake of the Czech company under the name Cutisin was acquired as a part of the American firm Teepak, which was later sold off. The Czech unit was fully acquired in 2004. Devro headquarters and plant are based in Moodiesburn, Scotland; significant facilities are also located in Bellshill, Scotland, close to the firm's headquarters. The company's other manufacturing and technical plants are located in Sandy Run, South Carolina in the United States and Bathurst, New South Wales in Australia. Devro also has sales offices in Germany, Russia, Hong Kong, Japan and New Zealand. Regional Business Directors have responsibility for day-to-day sales and manufacturing operations. Strategy, financial policy, marketing and information systems are managed centrally, with an Executive Committee and Board of Directors providing leadership and experience.
