fiogf49gjkf0d As manufacturers continue to search for new ways to manufacture products at faster speeds, there is increasing demand for greater efficiency and accuracy from their packaging operations. This rings true especially in the high speed, high volume food & beverage sector. Many manufacturers in this sector are seeking to partner with companies that take responsibility and are accountable for sustainable packaging solution. This consequently increases the pressure on machine builders to design, build and integrate packaging lines that are not only fast and reliable, but flexible enough to keep up with frequent line changes and at the same time, scalable enough to handle the introduction of new products.
Barry-Wehmiller Companies, Inc. has been a leading global provider of end-to-end consulting and packaging technology solutions for more than 100 years. Barry-Wehmiller has recently launched many new products and services especially for the food & beverage sector to help manufacturers with their unique challenges. Operating under multiple product brands such as PneumaticScaleAngelus, Hayssen Sandiacre, Thiele Technologies, Fleetwood Goldco Wyard and service providers such as Barry-Wehmiller International Resources and the Design Group, Barry-Wehmiller offers single-point solutions for all your filling, conveying, seaming, capping, labelling, pouch packing, tray & case packing, case palletising, pallet wrapping and line integration requirements. In this article, we will take a deeper look at the cutting edge new-age technologies that Barry-Wehmiller offers especially for your end of the line automation needs.
Recent project
One of the recent projects that Thiele Technologies completed was for a leading beverage manufacturer. The customer required a high-speed, high-accuracy machine to load cans and bottles onto trays to create cases and packages of multiple sizes and configurations. Reliability, throughput and the ability to quickly adjust to frequent line changes with minimal operator involvement were the three important requirements of the customer. Thiele Technologies designed and built the Envoy Tray Former Packer, one of the fastest machines of its type on the market to satisfy this requirement. With its integrated, electronic servo-motion design, the machine delivers superior tray placement and transfer accuracy with speeds up to 150 trays a minute. The machine's user-friendly features allow the beverage producer to easily manage product changeovers. The electronic servo-based control system provides recipe-based changeovers, allowing the manufacturer to reduce the changeover time from several hours to about 20 minutes.
“Continuous technological innovation and a commitment to localised and customer-centric service, complemented in recent years by a number of strategic acquisitions, have allowed Thiele Technologies to emerge as one of the largest and most well-balanced manufacturers of high-speed integrated packaging machinery solutions in the global marketplace,” said Michele Allamprese, VP, global business development, Thiele. With a history spanning nearly 100 years, Thiele is an industrial leader in the supply of placing, feeding, bagging, cartoning, case packing and palletising systems for a variety of industries, including fresh and frozen food, pet food, beverage, dairy and bakery.
Recent introduction
Yet another recent introduction targeting the needs of the food and beverage industry is the Robotic Rotary Case Palletizer by FleetwoodGoldcoWyard. The Robotic Rotary Case Palletizer has the capability to palletise up to eight different Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) of products simultaneously. The system is designed for the company’s currently palletising multi-product, rainbow packaging, or with multiple production lines feeding a common palletiser. It is capable of handling an array of case-sizes and layer patterns at the same time. When utilising a bar code reader, the system not only indicates the proper pallet position for robotic placement for a specific SKU but also rejects incorrectly printed cases automatically. FleetwoodGoldcoWyard’s End-of-Arm Tooling expertise allows for handling various product types and configurations, such as single packages as well as entire rows or layers of product at a time. The robotic case palletising systems can operate in the harshest of environments including sub-zero freezer applications. Martin Fahy, sales manager, EMEA, states, “The unique configuration of the Rotary Case Palletizer provides a single-point interface for the fork lift, while providing a compact space-saving layout that can be “tucked” into a small area in the customer’s facility.” The Rotary Case Palletizer is without doubt the most space-saving concept for multi-line palletising.
Seamless integration
Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR) with headquarters in Chennai, India, seamlessly integrates many of the offerings from Barry-Wehmiller Companies, Inc., to provide a complete solution. BWIR specialises in project engineering and line-integration services. With expertise in implementation of controls and IT solutions for manufacturing industry like SCADA, Track & Trace, Manufacturing Execution Systems and Manufacturing Intelligence Solutions, BWIR has evolved as an integrated systems supplier of complete packaging solutions with a common technology platform that would surpass the capabilities of ordinary individual component integrators. As Vasant Bennett, president, BWIR says, “We knew that we had to take more of a ‘full system’ approach. We needed to move from simply consulting and supplying components to providing complete system solutions.“
This is reiterated by BWIR’s director of engineering services, Senthil Kumar, who adds, “We recognise that customers are better served when an organisation steps up to accept single-point responsibility for production line integration solutions. BWIR with its strong India presence and backed by combined strength of diverse legacy brands under the Barry-Wehmiller umbrella, is focussed on servicing this need in the EMEA region.”
Senthil goes on to add that with such great products from Barry-Wehmiller, top quality integration services of BWIR and our unique people-centric approach to business, the Indian customers can truly reap the benefits of cutting edge technology and affordability of an Indian operator.
