Christ University offers one-year diploma course in wine tasting

Christ University will now offer a one-year diploma course in fine art of wine tasting. The course is being offered in association with the United Vinters Ltd, part of the UB Group. A memorandum of understanding was inked to commence the course. The effort will now give a fillip to the wine sector which is facing an acute manpower crunch.

Christ University, which already offers hotel management courses, has now diversified to offer the fine art of wine tasting course which will commence from November 19, 2009. The course curriculum and guest lecturers will be supported by the UB Vinters.

 The diploma course in wine will comprise three components: foundation, intermediate and advanced level. The foundation segment of 100 hours will cover tasting. The intermediate will be for a duration of 120 hours where apart from wine tasting, market visits are part of the syllabus. The advanced component comprising 120 hours will provide specialisation in wine retail, marketing, brand promotion, wine tasters, and cellar controls. In addition, the candidate will also be offered a three month work experience and placement at a winery.

According to Jaykumar, senior lecturer, Department of Hotel Management, Christ University, this is a niche course and the first-of-its-kind in the country. The intake will be around 15 students while eligibility criteria is pre university certificate with 55 per cent marks and candidates from the food & beverage industry could also apply to increase their expertise.

A passing grade of 75 per cent is required for completion of the course. Certificate will be awarded by the Christ University in association with the United Vinters Ltd. The wines for tasting will be provided by United Vinters Ltd and the Wine Society of India.

Food for food and wine pairing sessions, the Christ University would provide an overview of the French, European, Oriental and Indian cuisine.

The course fee is Rs. 1 lakh. The  course curriculum is tailor made for the current personnel requirements for the wine industry both in India and abroad. It covers a range of related subjects including the history of wine, the wine regions of the world, viticulture (grape varieties) and vinification (wine making), types and styles of wine, understanding wine labels, understanding quality designations, wine service and storage, food and wine pairing and responsible consumption. However, tasting will form a fundamental part of the course, said Jaykumar.

The course will be held three days in a week. Around 60 percent will constitute theory and 40 percent practical sessions which covers label identification, color, taste, intricacies of wine business, in- house simulation.

India wine industry is valued at Rs. 1,800 crore with a growth rate of 12 percent per annum. With Karnataka implementing the wine policy, a number of players have entered the fray  and there are also several wine boutiques coming up.
