Discovering the world’s best cup of AeroPress coffee was the objective of the Mumbai chapter of the World AeroPress Championship, a global coffee-making competition, which took place at Coffee By Di Bella outlet at Vama, on Peddar Road recently. Coffee By Di Bella won the title last season.

The just-concluded essay witnessed the highest number of competitors than any other city, with 56 baristas putting forth their best recipes to the ultimate test. The excitement was palpable, as baristas discussed their favourite techniques and geared up to focus their attention on brewing the perfect cup of Java Joe.

Each season is comprised of a series of regional and national competitions, run by independent hosts across 60 countries, which culminates with the World AeroPress Championship finale that will be held in London.

Competitors had eight minutes, in which they had to prepare, brew, and present their renditions of the jitter juice to a panel of judges, comprising Shravan from Kalledevapura estate; Ajay, Q grader and Indian Barista Championship judge; Shreedev from Hullikere estate and Siddharth, Q grader and SCA certified trainer. They evaluated each coffee and made their own assessment as to which was the best. There were no scoresheets or discussion, just 100 per cent personal preference.

The winner of this year's Indian AeroPress Championship will be representing India in London at the World Aeropress Championship 2019. The winning Baristas of the Mumbai Chapter were Mr. Mahesh Khatre from Blue Tokai, Miss Pooja Margonde from Coffee By Di Bella and Mr. Mehul Ved, a home barista.

Rahul Leekha, director, Coffee By Di Bella, said, “Our broader aim was always to educate our patrons on the art of coffee drinking and brewing. The association with the World AeroPress Championship and the honour of hosting this event has been great.”

“Being able to provide the stepping stone for an overwhelming number of coffee lovers, sharing insights with baristas that have coffee running through their veins has been a tremendous experience. At its heart, the World AeroPress Championship exists to bring coffee-loving people together in an open, inclusive, and fun environment,” he added.
