Mahananda Dairy plans to introduce Any Time Milk vending machines across Mumbai city. Mahananda has already launched a pilot project in its headquarters at Goregaon. Soon it will open outlets all over the city. Amul has already started the scheme in Gujarat.
Consumers can get the tetra pack milk either by using a pre-paid swipe card or cash dispensers. The tetra pack will come in half litre and one-litre packets. Mahananda Dairy chairman Vinayak Patil said it was an effort by the dairy to introduce new services for the benefit of consumers.
"People can avail this service at their convenience and this can save both time and energy," Patil said. The focus would be on slum pockets where the problem was acute and then it would target large cooperative societies. Mahananda would also introduce other milk products in the vending machine to dispense items such as srikhand, ice-cream and butter milk. Mahananda produces 7 lakh litres of milk every day and plans to venture into ice-cream making and flavoured milk in tetra packs.
Mahananda is also eyeing a contract to supply flavoured milk to civic students, and has asked the BMC for it. With a Haryana-based company charging Rs 11 per unit, Maharashtra has agreed to supply the same at Rs 10.50.
