Dairy cooperative giant Amul is moving towards becoming a $2billion brand. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets Amul milk and milk products has reported a sales turnover of Rs 8,002 crore for the fiscal 2009-10. It is now targeting a sales turnover of Rs 10,000 crore for the current fiscal.
The growing market for dairy products and inflation enabled GCMMF to grow at 19 per cent during 2009-10 over 2008-09 that witnessed a sales turnover of Rs 6,711 crore. The group turnover of Amul, consisting of 18 district unions, is estimated to have reached close to Es 12,000 crore.
Sale of Amul milk brought in revenues of Rs 3,000 crore during 2009-10. Among others, ice cream, milk-based beverages, UHT milk and curd registered highest sales growth. Sale of butter, however, remained flat during the year on account of poor monsoon last year hampering the growth of milk production. Similarly, the export market also remained flat for Amul brand of products due to limited milk production.
