fiogf49gjkf0d LANXESS, a Germany-based company that makes beverage stabilisers and sells them under the brand name Velcorin, showcased the product at drink technology India (dti) 2012, the trade fair that commenced at Bombay Exhibition Centre on November 6, 2012.
The company was represented by Philipp Borgs, product manager, business line beverage technology, and Marcus Taupp, head, applied science, material protection products, who are based at its headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany. It has a corporate office in Thane as well.
At an interaction, Borgs explained that Velcorin is a "microbial control agent".
"Velcorin can be used in a variety of drinks without influencing the taste of the beverage," said Borgs. The beverage categories are juice-based beverages (with or without carbonisation), carbonated soft drinks (CSD), ice teas, energy drinks, isotonic drinks, flavoured waters, etc.
Saying that the registration for Indian beverage manufacturers to use Velcorin had only been obtained this year, Borgs added, "It cannot be used for tea, milk, coffee, beer, etc. It is compatible with wine in Germany, but the Indian wine industry is too small for Velcorin to be used."
The interaction threw up the following facts about Velcorin – it has no effect on the colour or taste of the beverage; complete hydrolysis of the beverage takes place after two to eight hours, and it is compatible with all kinds of packaging, including PET and glass.
"Velcorin ensures the effective destruction of micro-organisms and inhibits their adaptation to the beverage. It permits the use of synergies with sorbates. Although it is a recent entrant to the Indian market, it has been used in the beverage industry in the West for the last 30 years, and has over 500 customers across the globe. Over 1,300 Velcorin dosing technology (DT) units are used in the beverage industry," Borgs said.
The beverage stabiliser reduces the risk of microbial contamination. Borgs explained, "Velcorin DT are easy to install and cover a small footprint (only an area of approximately two square metres is required). The dispersion is consistent and homogeneous, it is designed for simple and safe operations, and is available in various models to match different line requirements."
He added, "Velcorin DT is easy to install into existing and new filling lines. The company also offers a service package, plant trials, microbiological support, annual training for all employees and annual maintenance of DT."
By implementing Velcorin, beverage companies can utilise CSD lines with sensitive beverages. As for the idle CSD lines, it must be noted that the CSD market is declining, the CSD lines are limited in beverage portfolio capabilities and the investment for new beverage lines is high.
Utilising lines with minimum investment and Velcorin has been recommended. Double-digit growth is expected for sensitive beverage categories. Existing CSD lines will now have cold-fill sensitive beverages. And easy upgrade with minimal investment is necessary.
LANXESS' Go Green initiative involves sustainable and modern cold fill with Velcorin to save PET and energy.
On the one hand, there is the hot fill method needs pasteurisation and has shape and label restrictions and requires heavyweight PET bottles. It would also consume a significant amount of energy and has an impact on the taste.
Cold fill with Velcorin, on the other, requires a modern bottle shape and labelling, a lightweight PET bottle, sustainable production and the taste of the product remains fresh.
