ne district this year, taking the total number of wineries in Pune from 12 units to 16 by 2007 year-end. The big names are already in Pune.

Work on UB Group's Four Seasons winery in Baramati is in progress. Sham Chougule's Champagne Indage Ltd is setting up a winery in Baramati.

Jubilant Organosys Limited, Deccan Plateau Vineyards Private Limited, Sap Connoisseurs Spirits Ltd, and Galaxy Wineries, were among the wineries that had sought permission. "Of these, two units would be located in Haveli while the Organosys will be in Nira," Vijay Chinchalkar, state excise superintendent, Pune district, said.

"The 100% excise tax holiday coupled with 4% sales tax is attracting players in this market. Usually, farming families with land holdings are among those who are turning into entrepreneurs," he said. At least two units would be ready to commence production by December 2007.

Pune district is currently home to around 12 wineries. Champagne Indage was among the first players to set up base in Narayangaon with three manufacturing units. The remaining wineries are located in and around Baramati. "Organosys is contract manufacturing some brands for United Spirits. And the wine unit could be located here," he said.

These wine manufacturing units have sought permission to set up capacities of around three lakh litres per annum. While these units fall under the SSI category, Baramati will soon be home to the country's biggest winery.

UB group's green field project Four Seasons Winery Limited will make seven million bottles of still and sparkling wines. Champagne Indage would be looking at a 2.5-million litre capacity plant here.

Yet another player, Venky's Rock, the wine division of Bala Entertainment, a standalone company of the Venkateshwara Hatcheries group, has acquired 17 acres of land near Pune to set up a bottling plant with a capacity of 2 million litres. The capacity would be increased to 7 million litres in a year.
