fiogf49gjkf0d The New Zealand avocado season was launched at an event at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi recently. It was co-organised by New Zealand Avocado – the apex body representing all New Zealand avocado growers and exporters.
Hass avocados (a product of the island nation) would be available in single packs, twin packs or on a kg basis at organised retail chains in the capital (such as Godrej Nature’s Basket, Food Hall and INA Market) until the end of February.
The fruit would later be available in other cities as well. The launch event also introduced AVANZA Ltd, one of New Zealand’s largest exporters of avocados to Asia. AVANZA Ltd represents three companies that would collectively ship 10,000 trays to India this season.
AVANZA Ltd would also invest in educating handlers and introducing avocados to consumers through a series of in-store tastings and innovative promotional events with celebrity chef Kunal Kapur.
Avocados are the third-largest fresh fruit export from New Zealand. The total crop for the 2014-15 season is estimated to be seven million trays, with 4.5 million avocados expected to be exported to India in this season.
New Zealand Avocado works with that country’s industry to set export standards, facilitate market access, promote avocados from New Zealand and provide technical information to all New Zealand growers, of which there are more than 1,600, based mainly in the Bay of Plenty and Northland.
Tony Ponder, vice-chair, New Zealand Avocado, and director, AVANZA Ltd, said, “We export to 14 countries, and are pursuing a global strategy and also stepping up our presence in the Asian region.”
“Markets like India are the key future markets for us. We would be following a strategy for the next five years to develop avocado market here. New Zealand growers are supplying India with their best avocados harvested at their best time. The New Zealand Hass avocado season is a special limited time to get high quality and nutritious avocados,” he added.
“New Zealand avocado exporters’ current delivery strategy means that avocados would be with the handlers in India 5-7 days after harvest, meaning New Zealand growers would deliver avocados of unrivalled freshness,” Ponder said.
New Zealand high commissioner Grahame Morton said, “With the entry of New Zealand avocados in India, we have created a new opportunity for Indian consumers.”
“Avocados are not commercially grown in India, and haven’t been widely available. As a nutritionally-rich fruit, avocados are a whole food suitable for all ages. We hope consumers give them a try,” he added.
Trade commissioner Richard White said, “We see the consumer preference growing towards consumption of avocados in the near future. They are nutritious, good to taste, fit well in any kind of recipe, and are good for your heart.”
