fiogf49gjkf0d Deliberating at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (which took place in the capital recently), a panel of experts, including The Energy and Resources Institute’s (TERI) director general R K Pachauri, stressed upon the efficient use of water to sustain food security, particularly in India.
It said, “Food production is the largest user of water at the global level. It is responsible for 80-90 per cent of consumptive blue water use. By 2050, it is estimated that about 9.2 billion people will share the planet, and it is expected that there will be 70 per cent more demand for food.”
The panel also comprised Sanjaasuren Oyun, minister of environment and green development, Mongolia, and Gajendra Haldea, advisor, Planning Commission.
“Addressing the current and future challenges of food security is largely dependent on improving the agricultural water productivity as well as using new and improved technologies to increase the yields, utilise inputs more efficiently and diversify to more sustainable and higher value cropping patterns,” Pachauri said.
“There is also need to adopt a more holistic approach to address the emerging challenges taking into consideration the technical, social and economic aspects of the above issues,” he added.
“This would necessitate comprehensive research to be carried out on the theme of water use efficiency at the farm level, different water conservation regeneration practices along with more efficient farm system practices,” TERI’s director general added.
On the occasion, TERI and Jain Irrigation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for research in sustainable management of water resources for efficient management of water in agriculture.
