fiogf49gjkf0d Wholesale and retail traders and the states will now get 10.5 million tonne foodgrains from the government through the open market sale scheme (OMSS), a step that has been taken by the government in an effort to contain inflation.
Communicating the decisions of cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA), finance minister P Chidambaram said, “We are providing the foodgrains to suppliers at a rate which is less than the market price, because the government has comfortable stock positions of wheat.”
K V Thomas, minister of state (independent charge) for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, said, “The decision by the government would help in controlling inflation.”
He added, “We are providing 10 million tonne wheat and half-a-million tonne rice from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns. This will definitely help in controlling the prices. The government will provide a subsidy of Rs 5,491 crore for 10.5 million tonne foodgrain.”
“The prices of both wheat and rice are less than the current market prices. CCEA has approved allocation of about 5,00,000 tonne of rice to the states for retail consumers at Rs 1,875 per quintal plus freight,” informed Thomas.
